单词 hackmatack
释义

hackmatackn.

Brit. /ˈhakmətak/, U.S. /ˈhækməˌtæk/

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps partly a borrowing from an Algonquian language. Perhaps partly a borrowing from German. Etymon: German Hackmatack.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps partly (i) < an Algonquian language (probably Western Abenaki), and partly (in sense 2) (ii) < German Hackmatack, Hackmantack (1770 or earlier), apparently an alteration (with metathesis) of Tacamahac , †Tacamahack the resin of any of various trees (1692 or earlier), the resin of the balsam poplar (1773 or earlier, also sometimes used to denote the tree: see tacamahac n.), perhaps influenced by or confused with the Algonquian word (or perhaps the English word in sense 1, although this is first attested later).Compare also the following, although its relation to the other words is unclear:1792 J. Belknap Hist. New-Hampsh. III. 33 On some mountains we find a shrubbery of hemlock and spruce, whose branches are knit together so as to be impenetrable. The snow lodges on their tops, and a cavity is formed underneath. These are called by the Indians, Hakmantaks.
