释义

hackbushn.

Brit. /ˈhakbʊʃ/, U.S. /ˈhækˌbʊʃ/
Forms:

α. late Middle English hackeboschys (plural), late Middle English hakbusse, late Middle English hakebusse, late Middle English–1500s hacbusshe, late Middle English–1500s hakbusshe, 1500s hacbushe, 1500s hackbus, 1500s 1800s 2000s– hackbush; Scottish pre-1700 hacbusch, pre-1700 hakbus, pre-1700 hakbusch, pre-1700 halkbusch, pre-1700 haukbusch.

β. 1500s hagbus, 1500s hagbusshes (plural), 1500s haggebusshes (plural), 1500s 1800s– hagbush; Scottish pre-1700 hagbusch.

Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch haecbusse.
Etymology: < Middle Dutch haecbusse, haegbusse, etc. (?c1442) < haec hook (see hake n.2) + busse firearm (a1420 or earlier; specific use of busse cylindrical receptacle: see box n.2). Compare Middle Low German hākelbusse , hākebusse , hākenbusse (1461 or earlier), German Hakenbüchse (1480 or earlier). Compare also ( < Dutch) Middle French haquebuse , haquebusche (1475; compare Middle French, French arquebuse arquebus n.) and ( < German) Middle French (Switzerland) hakenbuchs (1452).Semantic note. The weapon was originally so called on account of the hook on the barrel, with which it was fastened to a carriage or other support to stabilize the barrel, both taking its weight and absorbing the recoil. In the course of the 16th cent. this word, as well as the related arquebus n., harquebut n. and hackbut n., came to be used for portable firearms more generally, and a new phrase was formed to distinguish the type with the hook; compare arquebus à croc n. and hackbut of croc n. Note on variant forms. The variation between forms with s and sh reflects variation in the realization of the phoneme /s/ in Dutch.
Now historical.
An early type of portable firearm; = arquebus n. 1. Cf. hackbut n. 1.
