1843 D. W. Mitchell in W. Yarrell Hist. Brit. Birds III. 505 P[uffinus] Major is very well known to the Scillonians by whom it is called Hackbolt.
1874 Zoologist 9 4262 After an almost entire disappearance for many years, I am glad to say that the greater shearwater, or ‘hackbolt’, has again visited the coasts of Devon and Cornwall in some numbers.
1888 Ld. Lilford in Coloured Fig. Birds Brit. Islands (1897) VI. Pl. 58 The fishermen in Scilly assured me that a pair or two of ‘Hagbolts’, as they call this bird, bred amongst the rocks of one of the south-western islets of the group, and I saw several during my stay at St. Mary's in 1852.
