Etymology: < H₂O, chemical formula representing water < H n., chemical symbol for hydrogen + two n. + O n.¹, chemical symbol for oxygen.The modern notation of H₂O did not become fully established until the late 19th cent. John Dalton ( New Syst. Chem. Philos (1810) II. 225–6) had regarded water as composed of one atom of hydrogen with one of oxygen (HO in modern nomenclature, though Dalton used graphic symbols to denote the elements). The chemical symbols for hydrogen and oxygen were introduced by Berzelius. He assigned water the modern formula, but wrote it H²O ( Journal für Chemie und Physik (1815) 15 434 in a German context). Avogadro predated Berzelius in regarding water as having two parts of hydrogen to one of oxygen ( Journal de physique, de chimie (1811) 73 60), but he did not represent this symbolically.
