Etymology: < the name of Edward V. Appleton (1892–1965), British physicist, who discovered the layer + layer n.
Atmospheric Physics. Now disused.
The upper or F stratum of the ionosphere, above the E (or Heaviside) layer; = F-layer at F n. 4. Appleton himself used the term F-layer for this stratum.
