Etymology: < gum n.² + lac n.¹, apparently so called because natural lac (which is harvested from trees although produced by insects) is reminiscent of gum (which is a secretion of the tree itself).Compare post-classical Latin gummi laccae (1581 or earlier), and also the earlier statement lacca est gumma herbe ‘lac is a gum from a plant’ (14th cent.). Compare also Middle French gomelac (1439 in an apparently isolated attestation; French gomme lacque (1614)).

Now chiefly historical.

The resinous secretion produced by lac insects; any of various preparations of this. Cf. lac n.¹ 1.
