Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin gubernātrīx.
Etymology: < classical Latin gubernātrīx female ruler, feminine form corresponding to gubernātor gubernator n. < gubernāt- , past participial stem of gubernāre govern v. + trīx -trix suffix. Compare earlier gubernatrice n., governatrice n., and later governatrix n.In use as adjective after ancient Greek κοσμοῦν that rules, use as adjective of present participle of κοσμεῖν to arrange, order, rule (see cosmetic adj.).
