Etymology: < arm n.1 + strong adj.Compare Old High German armstrengi and armstarc (both in late sources), both after post-classical Latin manufortis (already in classical Latin as the phrase manū fortis). Compare also the early surnames Adam Armestrang, William Armestrang (2nd half of 13th cent.).
