单词 gype
释义

gypen.

Brit. /ɡʌɪp/, U.S. /ɡaɪp/, Scottish English /ɡʌip/, Irish English /ɡaɪp/
Forms: 1600s– gype, 1700s– gipe, 1800s guipe, 1800s gyp.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Icelandic gípa glutton, profligate person, large vessel, large opening (also in the compound fégípa miser), Norwegian regional gipa gaping wound, mouth of a sack) < an ablaut variant (e -grade) of the Scandinavian base of Norwegian regional gipa (with short ĭ ) to cause to gape, to open repeatedly, to gasp for breath (see gasp v.).With sense 1 compare rare Scots gype (adjective) very hungry, voracious, (also) eager, keen (early 19th cent.), gypish miserly (1900 or earlier). Earlier currency of sense 2 is apparently implied by gypit adj.
Scottish and Irish English (northern).
1. A glutton; a greedy or avaricious person. Obsolete.
