Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish guajillo.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish guajillo < guaje , any of several tropical Mexican trees of the genus Leucaena (family Mimosaceae ( Leguminosae)) that bear edible seed pods ( < Nahuatl huāxinin ) + -illo , diminutive suffix (see -illa suffix). In sense 2 so called in allusion to the appearance of the pods, which resemble the seed pods of Senegalia berlandieri (see sense 1).
1. Any of a number of shrubs or small trees of the family Mimosaceae ( Leguminosae), found in southwestern parts of North America; esp. Senegalia berlandieri, which has fern-like leaves and round white flowering heads and is an important honey plant in arid areas.
