Etymology: Variant of grauwacke n., with assimilation of the first element to grey adj. N.E.D. (1900) gives the pronunciation as (grēi·wækə) /ˈɡreɪwækə/.
Geology.
Originally: any of a series of coarse-grained, earthy sandstones and shales forming extensive deposits in the Harz Mountains and other parts of Europe. In later use: any coarse-grained, typically dark sandstone containing angular or partly rounded mineral and rock fragments in a fine-grained clayey matrix. Also as a count noun: a rock of this type. Cf. grauwacke n.
