Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Yiddish lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: green adj., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < green adj. + -er suffix1, perhaps after either Yiddish griner recent (and hence, inexperienced) immigrant or German Grüner in similar use. Compare earlier greenhorn n. 3.

An inexperienced or naive person, esp. a foreigner who has recently arrived in the country. Cf. greenhorn n. 3.
