Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French grandiloquence; Latin grandiloquentia.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French grandiloquence (1544; French grandiloquence , rare before 19th cent.), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin grandiloquentia (14th cent.) < classical Latin grandiloquus (see grandiloquous adj.) + -entia -ence suffix. Compare later grandiloquent adj.
Grandiloquent manner or quality; a high-flown, pompous, or exaggerated style of speech or writing.
