Etymology: < French grège silk that has not undergone any dying, bleaching, or other finishing processes, the colour of such silk (between beige and grey), ecru (1576 in Middle French) < Italian greggio natural, unprocessed, untreated, of uncertain origin.In form greige probably by association with beige n. (in some instances, especially of senses A. 2, B. 2, probably apprehended as a blend of grey n. and beige n.).
