Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian gran fondo.
Etymology: < Italian gran fondo (1958 or earlier; 1930 or earlier denoting a long-distance alpine event; also earlier in cycling in corsa di gran fondo (1920)) < gran great (see grand adj.) + fondo athletic endurance (1907 or earlier in corsa di fondo and gara di fondo , both denoting long-distance alpine events; first half of the 14th cent. in sense ‘limit, extreme’; a1321 in sense ‘bottom’) < classical Latin fundus bottom (see fundus n.).The term is recorded earlier in an English context as the name of a long-distance swimming race held in Italy: 1990 Times 18 July 42/3 Tracey Wickham..made a gruelling return to competition this week by winning the 20-kilometre Gran Fondo race on Lake Trasimeno.
A long-distance cycling event of a type originating in Italy, in which a large number of participants follow a marked route.
