单词 antiphon
释义

antiphonn.

/ˈæntɪfən/
Forms: Also 1500s–1700s antiphone.
Etymology: < French antiphone, or < medieval Latin antiphōna , an adaptation as a n. feminine singular of Greek τὰ ἀντίϕωνα n. (prop. adj.) neuter plural, musical accords, things ‘sounding in response,’ of which the singular τὸ ἀντίϕωνον is used by Aristotle for ‘an accord in the octave’; < ἀντί in return + -ϕωνος sounding, < ϕωνή vocal sound. Antiphon is thus a re-adaptation of the word which in earlier times became anthem n., after the latter had lost its etymological sense.
