单词 graciosity
释义

graciosityn.

Brit. /ˌɡreɪʃɪˈɒsᵻti/, /ˌɡreɪsɪˈɒsᵻti/, U.S. /ˌɡreɪʃiˈɑsədi/, /ˌɡreɪsiˈɑsədi/
Forms: late Middle English graciousete, 1500s (Scottish) graciosite, 1600s gratiositie, 1800s graciosity.
Origin: Partly a borrowing from French; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French gracieuseté ; gracious adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French gracieuseté (French gracieuseté ) civility, politeness, good manners (1409; < gracieux gracious adj. + -eté -ty suffix1). Subsequently remodelled after post-classical Latin gratiositas pleasing quality (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), partiality (5th cent.), graciousness, condescension (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin grātiōsus gracious adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French gratiosité , French †graciosité charm, beauty (a1507 in an apparently isolated attestation), graciousness (late 18th cent.); also Spanish graciosidad (1385 as †graciosidat ), Portuguese graciosidade (15th cent.), Italian graziosità (14th cent. as †graziositade ). In some later examples probably < gracious adj. + -ity suffix: see -osity suffix. Compare earlier graciousness n.
Now rare (chiefly humorous).
The quality or state of being gracious, graciousness.
