Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin gracilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin gracilis, denoting muscles (1555 or earlier), specific use (short for musculus gracilis (1542 or earlier)) of classical Latin gracilis gracile adj., after the use in Hellenistic Greek of ancient Greek ἰσχνός to designate certain muscles.
Anatomy and Zoology.
A straight, slender muscle located on the medial aspect of the human thigh, originating from the pubis and inserting on the tibia, and acting to adduct the thigh, flex the knee, and rotate the leg medially; (also) a comparable muscle in other vertebrates. Also gracilis muscle.
