Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Dutch gouvernante; French gouvernante.
Etymology: < (i) Dutch gouvernante female regent (1533 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Middle French, French gouvernante gouvernante n., with remodelling after govern v. Compare earlier governant n., and also earlier governess n., governoress n.
Now historical and rare.
1. A female ruler; esp. a woman who exercises delegated authority, a female regent. Obsolete. governante general = Governess-General n. 1.
