Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Gotham.
Etymology: < Gotham, the name of a village (apparently Gotham in Nottinghamshire, in the borough of Rushcliffe), famous for the folly of its inhabitants. The story of the Wise Men of Gotham is supposed to have originated in an incident during the reign of King John (1199–1216); when the king wanted to establish a royal highway through the village, the villagers feigned madness in order to avoid this plan being carried out. The place name was first applied to New York City by Washington Irving in his Salmagundi Papers (1807). The motivation for the application to Newcastle is unclear.
