单词 | gosting |
释义 | gostingn. Explained in Johnson and some later dictionaries as ‘madder’: taken from 1736 Ainsworth Thesaurus 1, ‘Gosting (herb), Rubia’. In the English-Latin part there is: ‘Rubia, Rubia tinctorum, an herb called gosling weed or clivers; madder’. Thus gosting in Ainsworth is a mistake for gosling weed, which does not mean, however, ‘madder’, but ‘goose-grass’ or ‘cleavers’.
