Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably originally imitative of the bird's call. Compare yarwhelp n. and the variants recorded at that entry. Compare (denoting a different bird) peewit n. and tewhit n. Compare also te-whit int. and tweet int.In early use often rendering classical Latin attagēn bird resembling the partridge, and also Spanish francolin (see francolin n.). Perhaps compare the surname of Willelmo Godwit (1301), although this is more likely to reflect the phrase good wit . In δ. forms probably influenced by the male forename Godwin.
1. Any of the fairly large and long-legged migratory wading birds which constitute the genus Limosa (family Scolopacidae), having very long, straight or slightly upcurved bills and (typically) reddish breeding plumage; esp. (in early use) either of the two species of this genus which breed or winter in Europe, the black-tailed godwit, L. limosa, and the bar-tailed godwit, L. lapponica, originally regarded as valuable game birds. Frequently with distinguishing word.bar-tailed, black-tailed, marbled godwit, etc.: see the first element.
