Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps originally modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: good adj., even n.1
Etymology: < good adj. + even n.1, in sense A. 1 perhaps originally after Middle Dutch goeden avont (a1425, in the passage translated in quot. 1481, or earlier; Dutch goeden avond ). Compare German guten Abend (Middle High German guoten ābent ). Compare good evening n., good evening int.The wide variation in the form of this word probably partly reflects its early currency in speech in the customary expressions listed at sense A. 1 (as God give you good even int., to bid (a person) good even, etc.); some forms may arise from shortening of these expressions.
Now chiefly archaic or in historical contexts.
A. n.
1. As part of a customary expression of good wishes on meeting or parting during the evening or (formerly) the afternoon (cf. sense B.). Originally in God give you good even int. at Phrases; now chiefly in to wish (also bid) (a person) (a) good even, and (as an address) a good even to you.
