单词 goddard
释义

goddardn.

Forms: late Middle English gooderd, late Middle English–1600s godard, 1500s godderd, 1500s goder, 1500s goderd, 1500s–1600s 1800s goddard.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French godart ; godet n.
Etymology: Either (i) < Middle French godart (1397: see note), apparently an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -art -ard suffix) of godet godet n., or (ii) formed within English as an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -ard suffix) of godet n. (although this is apparently first attested later).Middle French godart is attested only in a single source (from outside Britain), and may show a coincidental development rather than the etymon of the English form. If so, this would imply earlier currency of English godet n. (compare also discussion at that entry).
Obsolete.
A drinking cup, a goblet.
