(a) = joss-stick n. at joss n.1 Compounds 2 (now rare); (b) (with reference to certain traditional cultures of Polynesia and East Asia, now esp. the Maori people of New Zealand) any of various types of carved wooden stick or peg used in religious rituals to represent a god, or in which a god is believed to dwell.Maori god-sticks are typically carved with a stylized representation of a face or head.
