单词 gosling
释义

goslingn.

Brit. /ˈɡɒzlɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈɡɑzlɪŋ/
Forms: α. Middle English geslyng(e, gesseling, 1500s–1800s Scottish gaislin(g, 1600s–1800s dialect gesling, (1500s Scottish gaysling, 1600s gazeling). β. Middle English gosselyng, gusling, Middle English–1500s gos(e)lyng(e, (1500s gozelyng), 1500s–1600s go(o)s(e)ling, 1600s–1800s goslin, (1600s gosselin, gooselin, gozeling), 1500s– gosling.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Partly formed within English, by derivation.
Etymology: Probably the α form is the earlier: Middle English geslyng , < Old Norse gǽsling-r (Swedish, Danish gäsling ), < gás goose n.: see -ling suffix1. The form surviving in standard English was probably a new formation on Middle English gōs goose n. + -ling suffix1; the shortening of the vowel is normal in formations of this kind.
1. A young goose.
