Etymology: perhaps suggested by golly int. (= God) and pollywog n. (dialect and U.S., = tadpole).
A name invented for a black-faced grotesquely dressed (male) doll with a shock of fuzzy hair. Also shortened ˈgolly, Golly. Also attributive and in other combinations.
