单词 gobshite
释义

gobshiten.

Brit. /ˈɡɒbʃʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈɡɑbˌʃaɪt/
Forms: 1900s– gobshite, 1900s– gobshyte.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: gob n.2, shite n., English shite , shit v.
Etymology: Probably < gob n.2 + either shite n. or shite, variant of shit v. (compare α. forms at shit v.). With sense 1 compare earlier gobby n., and also gob n.5 With sense 3 compare earlier bullshit n. 1.J. E. Lighter ( Hist. Dict. Amer. Slang (1994) I. 913/1) also records a sense ‘an expectorated wad of chewing tobacco’ (compare gob n.1), supported by the following comment from an unpublished source of 1918, taking this to be the original sense:1918 in J. E. Lighter Hist. Dict. Amer. Slang (1994) I. 913/1 Gob, sailor. Derived from the term ‘gob-shite’ or excretion from chewing tobacco. Sense 2 may perhaps be of independent origin, or show assimilation of an originally distinct word (it could even be historically earlier than sense 1, although not recorded until later). The following isolated example of a similar-looking word (apparently < Irish elements) has sometimes been compared:1910 P. W. Joyce Eng. as we speak it in Ireland xiii. 263 Gobshell; a big spittle direct from the mouth. (Limerick.) From Irish gob, the mouth, and seile [shella], a spittle. No corroborating evidence has been found for a supposed Asian origin (compare quot. 1929 at sense 1), or for a derivation from a supposed nickname Gobshike (taken to be < Gob- (in Gobbles : see gobby n.) + shike- (in shikepoke at shitepoke n. β. forms)) given in L. E. Ruggles Navy Explained (1918) 10–1.
