Etymology: < post-classical Latin gobonatus (from 1385 in British sources; apparently < gobon- (in Anglo-Norman goboné gobony adj.) + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix2) + -ed suffix1. Compare gobony adj.
Heraldry. Now rare.
= gobony adj. Chiefly in predicative use.In quot. ?1795 more generally: composed of alternate blocks of colour.
