Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: good adj., will n.1
Etymology: < good adj. + will n.1 Compare Middle Low German gōtwille, Old Icelandic góðvili, Old Danish godvilje (Danish godvilje; now rare), all in sense ‘benevolence, kindness, friendliness’, and also Old Swedish godhvili virtuous disposition, cooperation (Swedish godvilja; now archaic). In Luke 2:14 ultimately rendering Hellenistic Greek εὐδοκία virtuous disposition, goodness, (chiefly used of God) approval, favour. The Greek word is attested almost exclusively in Jewish and early Christian religious writings (frequently in the Septuagint, where it often refers to the favour and benevolence which God shows to human beings, as well as in the New Testament). Many manuscripts of the Greek text of Luke 2:14 have ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία ‘peace on earth, goodwill to men’. This reading was adopted in the Textus Receptus, whence the versions of Coverdale (compare quot. 1535 at sense 2b; probably immediately after early modern German vnd den menschen eyn wolgefallen (1522 in Luther)) and the King James Bible (compare quot. 1611 at sense 2a). Although only a few Greek manuscripts have the alternative reading ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκίας ‘peace on earth among men of goodwill’ (whence the Vulgate's pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis , reflected e.g. in the Old English and Wycliffite versions), internal evidence supports this as the preferable reading, and it consequently figures in the standard modern editions of the Greek New Testament, providing the source text for most modern English versions (e.g. R.S.V. ‘peace among those with whom he (i.e. God) is pleased’, N.R.S.V. ‘peace among those whom he (i.e. God) favours’, R.E.B. ‘peace for men on whom his favour rests’). In Old English (and occasionally also in early Middle English) the first element is usually treated as a normal adjective inflected for case. Word division in Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts. In later English frequently written as two words; still usually so written in sense 1 and also often in other senses.
1. Usually as two words. A virtuous, pious, or honest disposition or intention; goodness, piety, virtue. Now chiefly in of good will as a postmodifying phrase. In later use overlapping with and often indistinguishable from sense 2a.With quot. OE1 compare quots. 1535 at sense 2b and 1611 at sense 2a. In pre-Reformation versions of Luke 2:14 (translating the Vulgate) the phrase good will often has this sense. From the 16th cent. until the late 19th cent., the phrase is usually retained, but used in sense 2. From the late 19th cent., the phrase is usually replaced by other words. See the note in the etymology for further discussion.
