单词 gobbing
释义

gobbingn.1

Brit. /ˈɡɒbɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈɡɑbɪŋ/
Forms: 1500s gobbinge, 1800s– gobbing.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: gob n.1, -ing suffix1; gob n.4, -ing suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently originally < gob n.1 + -ing suffix1; in later use perhaps also partly < gob n.4 (although compare discussion at that entry) + -ing suffix1. With sense 2 compare earlier gobbin n.2 and slightly later gob v.3This word apparently originally referred to waste material from coal mining, both in open cast and underground mining, and despite the gap in attestation, it is possible that the word was in continuous (perhaps informal) use, but remained unrecorded. In the context of underground mining (see sense 2), the sense of the (probably) related term gobbin n.2 was apparently later transferred to the excavated spaces backfilled with such material (perhaps influenced by association with goaf n.2).
