Etymology: Partly (i) < Scottish Gaelic gobag, denoting various kinds of fish, including the dogfish and the sand eel (probably < gob beak (see gob n.²) + -ag diminutive suffix), partly (ii) < Irish gobóg dogfish, sand eel (19th cent. or earlier), and partly (iii) < Manx gobbag dogfish (late 18th cent. or earlier), also used as a form of mild abuse for the people of Peel. The Irish and Manx words are formed similarly to the Scottish Gaelic word. Compare gibbin n.In forms with a in the first syllable (especially in Scots use) perhaps influenced by gab n.² The β. forms reflect the pronunciation of the etymon in Manx.
