a. Rugby and (occasionally) American Football. An attempt to kick the ball between the goalposts and over the crossbar in order score a point or points following a try or touchdown, or (in rugby) resulting from a penalty. Also occasionally: a successful kick of this type.In both sports such kicks are now almost always taken as place-kicks, though the rules permit players to take them as drop-kicks.In rugby football a kick of this type is now more usually referred to as a kick at goal (see goal n. Phrases 1), or as a conversion or penalty kick specifically.
