Etymology: < Anglo-Norman abbacie, abbecie abbey (1393), benefice or office of an abbot or abbess (early 15th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin abbacia, abbatia abbey n.; compare -cy suffix. Compare earlier abbatie n., abbey n.The β. forms probably show remodelling by association with abbot n.
