单词 gooddeed
释义

gooddeedn.

Forms: see good adj., n., adv., and int. and deed n.; also early Middle English geddede (perhaps transmission error).
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with, or formed similarly to, Middle Dutch goetdaet (Dutch †goeddaad ), Middle Low German gōtdāt , Old High German guottāt (Middle High German guottāt , German (now archaic) Guttat ) < the Germanic base of good adj. + the Germanic base of deed n. Compare wel-dede n. and the Germanic parallels cited at that entry, and also misdeed n.In Old English a true compound (with first element uninflected); the corresponding noun phrase gōd dǣd (with first element a normal adjective inflected for case and number) is also attested (see good adj. 14b, 15b and compare the variant reading in quot. OE2 at sense 1). In Middle English formally distinguishable from the two-word phrase only in texts retaining adjectival inflection for good adj.; to some extent the Middle English evidence reflects modern editorial interpretation of Middle English scribal practice.
Obsolete.
1. An act of goodness; a good deed; (also) pious or virtuous action.Replaced in later Middle English by good deed as a two-word noun phrase (cf. good adj. 14b): see note in etymology for further details.
