单词 antimasque
释义

antimasquen.

Brit. /ˈantɪmɑːsk/, /ˈantɪmask/, U.S. /ˈæn(t)iˌmæsk/, /ˈæn(t)əˌmæsk/
Forms: 1600s antemask, 1600s antemaske, 1600s antemasque, 1600s antimaske, 1600s–1700s antimask, 1600s– antimasque.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: anti- prefix, masque n.
Etymology: Probably < anti- prefix + masque n., with reference to something perceived as constituting (in any of various ways) a counterpoint to the main entertainment. The forms in ante- imply a reanalysis as showing ante- prefix (the antimasque being taken to be primarily something prefatory to the masque), assuming that this was not in fact the origin of the word (compare the variant anti- at ante- prefix Forms). Compare also antic n. 2c, and the following collocation with antic adj.:1621 B. Jonson Masque of Augures 149 We may bee admitted, if not for a Masque, for an Antick Masque.
Now chiefly historical.
A scene (often grotesque or comic) used as a prelude to a masque, or an interlude between its sections, and intended to provide a counterpoint to the main entertainment.Antimasques were most popular in the early 17th cent.: see note at masque n. 1a.
