Etymology: < golden adj. + bull n.2, probably after German güldene Bulle (mid 14th cent. denoting any golden seal attached to an important document, early 15th cent. with specific reference to the bull issued by Charles IV; now usually goldene Bulle).Compare post-classical Latin bulla aurea , aurea bulla (from 13th cent. in British sources, also in continental sources; 1555 or earlier with specific reference to the bull issued by Charles IV; compare chrysobull n. at chryso- comb. form 1).
