单词 antillean
释义

Antilleanadj.n.

Brit. /anˈtɪlɪən/, U.S. /ænˈtɪljən/, /ænˈtɪliən/, Caribbean English /anˈtɪlian/, /anˈtɪliʌn/
Forms: 1700s– Antillean, 1700s–1800s Antillian.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Antilles , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of the Antilles, a large group of islands in the Caribbean + -an suffix: see -ean suffix. The name of the Antilles (Spanish Antillas ) was modelled on earlier Antilia , the name of a (mythical) land in the Atlantic Ocean. The name of the real islands occurs in Spanish contexts from the early 16th cent. (initially as islas Antillas ) and in English contexts from the second half of the 16th cent. In quot. 1738 apparently after German †antillische Inseln (1697 in the source translated; now Antillen ), itself probably ultimately after Spanish. With the form Antillian compare -ian suffix.
