单词 grassearth
释义

grassearthn.

Brit. /ˈɡrɑːsəːθ/, /ˈɡrasəːθ/, U.S. /ˈɡræsˌərθ/
Forms:

α. late Old English gærsyrð, Middle English garserthe, Middle English graserde, Middle English greserthe, 1900s– grassearth (historical).

β. Middle English gareshurthe, Middle English garshurde, Middle English gersherthe, Middle English grashert, Middle English grasherth, Middle English grasherxe, 1700s–1800s grasshearth (historical), 1700s–1800s grasshurt (historical).

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: grass n.1, earth n.2
Etymology: < grass n.1 + earth n.2 Compare post-classical Latin grashurtha (1260 in a British source). Compare gavel-earth n. at gavel n.1 Compounds and also grass-acre n. at grass n.1 Compounds 5.In Middle English, the word is only attested in Latin contexts. The frequency of forms with initial h- and other formal variation seen in the β. forms suggests that the connection with earth n.2 was no longer clear; such forms may show influence from herd n.2 or hearth n.1 (compare the interpretation implied in quot. 1706).
Now rare (historical after Middle English).
A ploughing service performed by a feudal tenant for his or her lord in return for grazing rights. Also: the land ploughed in the performance of this service. In some locations this service appears to have been specifically associated with ploughing to prepare the land for the winter crops.
