Etymology: < classical Latin grassāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of grassārī (see grassant adj.). Compare earlier grassation n., grassator n.Compare German grassieren (early 16th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. Of a disease: to rage. Later more generally, of anything unwelcome, harmful, etc.: to flourish or spread unchecked.
