Etymology: < gold n.1 + stone n.Compare Dutch goudsteen (1598), Middle Low German goldstēn, Old High German goldstein (Middle High German goltstein, German Goldstein), denoting any gold-coloured precious or semi-precious stone, especially topaz or chrysolite; also (more recently) in the sense ‘aventurine’.
