Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abattoir.
Etymology: < French abattoir, abatoir slaughterhouse (1806; earlier in sense ‘breach in a wall’ (16th cent. in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation)) < abattre to strike down, kill (see abate v.1) + -oir (see -ory suffix1).
A slaughterhouse; a place where animals are killed for food.In early use chiefly in French context.
