Origin: Probably a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic glam.
Etymology: Probably < Scottish Gaelic glam, (also) glàm to devour, (of e.g. a dog) to seize voraciously (corresponding to Irish glám to grab, to clutch), of unknown origin. Compare Scottish Gaelic glamadh (a dog's) bite (18th cent. or earlier, also with an unexplained variant glamhadh ). Compare Scots glammach (noun) act of snatching (1804), (verb) to grope blindly (1827), and also glamp v.1
