Etymology: < scientific Latin Arabis ( Linnaeus Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 335; 1753 as valid genus name: see note at definition), specific use of post-classical Latin arabis (1513 or earlier: see note), apparently an alteration of draba draba n., after classical Latin Arab- , Arabs Arab adj.1, on the supposition that the plant was of eastern origin.Before being established as a genus name, the Latin name arabis was used, often as a parallel to draba (see draba n.), to refer to any of numerous small cruciferous plants now classified in various other genera including Thlaspi, Draba, Iberis, and Lepidium. Compare the following for an earlier occurrence of the Latin name in an English context with reference to the candytuft Iberis umbellata:1578 H. Lyte tr. R. Dodoens Niewe Herball 629 This herbe [candy Thlaspi] is called..in Latine Arabis and Draba.Greek *ἀραβίς is apparently not attested.
Any of numerous plants comprising or formerly included in the genus Arabis (family Brassicaceae ( Cruciferae)), consisting of herbaceous annual or perennial plants having a basal rosette of leaves and small four-petalled flowers and native chiefly to north temperate regions (also called rock cress); esp. (in later use) any of the kinds grown as ornamental rock or border plants in gardens.
