Etymology: < scientific Latin Arabis ( Linnaeus Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 335; 1753 as valid genus name: see note at definition), specific use of post-classical Latin arabis (1513 or earlier: see note), apparently an alteration of draba draba n., after classical Latin Arab- , Arabs Arab adj.¹, on the supposition that the plant was of eastern origin.Before being established as a genus name, the Latin name arabis was used, often as a parallel to draba (see draba n.), to refer to any of numerous small cruciferous plants now classified in various other genera including Thlaspi, Draba, Iberis, and Lepidium.
