Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: arabin n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < arabin n. + -ic suffix. In arabinic acid n. after German Arabinsäure (C. Neubauer 1857, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 101 106). Compare French arabinique (in acide arabinique : 1884 or earlier). Compare earlier arabic adj.2
Chemistry.
arabinic acid n. an acidic polysaccharide containing arabinose units and which is obtained from gum arabic, in which it is present as salts; cf. arabin n.

1926 A. W. Schorger Chem. Cellulose & Wood v. 157 Poumaréde and Figuier, by the extraction of wood with alkali, obtained a substance having the properties of pectin. It was looked upon as identical with arabinic acid.
2004 Cement & Concrete Res. 34 879/2 Other chemicals that contained pentose sugar moieties (groups) were also effective in inhibiting crystal length. They included arabinic acid, galacturonic acid, adenosine, and cytidine.
