Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Partly also a borrowing from German. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish araba; Persian arāba; Russian arba; German Arba.
Etymology: In α. forms partly < (i) Ottoman Turkish araba, ʿaraba cart (14th cent.; Turkish araba , now also in sense ‘motor car’), later also in sense ‘gun carriage’, and partly < (ii) Persian arāba, aroba; the precise relationship between the Turkish and Persian words and their ulterior etymology are uncertain and disputed. In β. forms < (iii) Russian arba cart, carriage (17th cent. in Old Russian; < a form in a Turkic language, probably Tatar arba ); in quot. 1814 via German Arba (1812 in the source translated, or earlier).
