Etymology: Probably < English regional (Devonshire) go-laddie yellowhammer (19th cent. or earlier), probably shortened < gold-laddie < gold n.1 + laddie n. (although the form gold-laddie is not securely attested before the 20th cent.), the bird being so called on account of its yellow colour.
