Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic gille-cas-fliuch.
Etymology: Apparently < Scottish Gaelic gille-cas-fliuch (first attested later: 1825 or earlier) < gille young man, servant (see ghillie n.) + cas , former genitive plural of cas foot (Early Irish cos : see cushag n.) + fliuch , former genitive plural of fliuch wet (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin liquēre to be liquid: see liquid adj.), in α. forms with remodelling of the first element after ghillie n. Compare earlier gilliewetfoot n.The form gilly-casfluich (with ui for iu ) goes back to a misreading or typographical error (apparently earliest in Scott; compare quot. 1814). The form gillie-casflice may also be the result of a such an error.
