Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: gill n.1, slit n.
Etymology: < gill n.1 + slit n.
In aquatic organisms: a narrow or elongated opening through which water passes over a gill; spec. (in chordates) each of the apertures in the pharyngeal wall through which water passes to the gills on either side; (in cartilaginous fishes also) each of the series of narrow apertures by which the gills open to the exterior. Also: each of the grooves or openings in the pharynx which represent or are homologous with these during the early embryonic development of all chordates, including higher vertebrates (cf. gill pouch n. 2).The gill slits of bony fishes are concealed by the operculum.
