Etymology: < gill n.1 + pouch n.
1. Zoology. A hollow structure forming part of or enclosing a gill; a branchial sac; esp. (a) each of a series of pouches forming the gills in agnathan fishes (hagfishes and lampreys), into and out of which water is pumped; (b) each of a series of ciliated sacs into which the gill slits of acorn worms open.

1847 Rep. Zool. for 1843 & 1844 (Ray Soc.) 358 They [sc. the gills of the stonefly Pteronarcys] are tuft-shaped (branchiæ fasciculares), composed of eight pairs of gill-pouches [Ger. Kiemensäcken], from which a number of long setaceous filaments spring on the outside, forming collectively a thick tuft on each of the pouches.
