(a) each of a series of pouches forming the gills in agnathan fishes (hagfishes and lampreys), into and out of which water is pumped; (b) each of a series of ciliated sacs into which the gill slits of acorn worms open.

2. Embryology. In a chordate embryo: each of a series of infoldings in the region of the pharynx, separated by the gill bars and ultimately giving rise to the gill slits where these are present.
